The tradition to celebrate wedding anniversaries dates from Roman times, when husbands crowned their wives with a silver wreath on their 25th anniversary and a gold wreath on the 50th.
In Commonwealth countries one can receive from the monarch a letter of congratulations on the 60th, 65th and 70th anniversaries.
Roman Catholics can apply for a papal blessing on the 25th, 50th and 60th anniversaries.
In 1937, the Jewellers of America Association compiled a gift list for each year up to the 25th and for every fifth anniversary thereafter. These gifts may vary from country to country and have changed over the years as fashion and lifestyles varied.
