In today’s world of conscious consumerism, an engagement ring represents more than just a symbol of love — it’s also a reflection of values. Couples now ask vital questions before making one of the most important purchases of their lives: Where was this diamond mined? Was it ethically sourced? Did it uplift a community? What is its environmental impact?
At Prins & Prins, we believe that every sustainable engagement ring should carry a story of integrity, care, and purpose. As a proudly South African jeweller with over four decades of heritage, we are committed to crafting timeless pieces that honour the Earth, empower communities, and embody responsible luxury.
The Rise of Ethical Jewellery
Modern jewellery buyers, especially engaged couples, are prioritizing ethical and environmental standards alongside beauty and craftsmanship. As concerns around greenwashing grow — with misleading use of terms like “eco-friendly,” “carbon-neutral,” and “sustainable” — it is more important than ever for jewellers to provide clear, substantiated information.
Unfortunately, many in the industry, both sellers of lab-grown and natural diamonds, still make unsupported environmental claims. But at Prins & Prins, transparency is not a trend — it’s our tradition.
From Mine to Finger: A Transparent Journey
Since our founding by gemmologist Dr. Petré Prins in 1982, Prins & Prins has remained an independent, family-owned jeweller. This independence grants us full control over our supply chains, allowing us to trace each gem and metal from its source to your setting.
All our natural diamonds in Southern Africa are billions of years old, ethically extracted from the rich soils of countries like Botswana, Namibia and South Africa. These conflict-free diamonds are mined under humane conditions, ensuring they do no harm — and often, much good.
Unlike uncertified providers or mass-market retailers, we do not compromise on transparency. Every diamond is accompanied by certification from the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) or the European Gemological Laboratory (EGL), guaranteeing authenticity, quality, and ethical sourcing.
This allows us to confidently offer traceable diamonds — each with a documented path from mine to masterpiece.
A Legacy of Upliftment and Education
Our commitment to green jewellery extends beyond gemstones. We actively reinvest in local communities through meaningful, long-term initiatives:
We offer bursaries to our team members, empowering career growth and personal development.
Since 2005, we have trained numerous goldsmith interns, supporting the future of South African craftsmanship.
A portion of every sale linked to visits to our Museum of Gems and Jewellery is donated to charitable causes — including Puppy Dog, a non-profit supported by former Miss South Africa, Anneline Kriel, which brings clean drinking water to those in need.
When you choose a Prins & Prins diamond, you’re choosing to support more than a jeweller. You’re investing in a chain of positive impact that uplifts artisans, educates future talent, and strengthens local communities.
Precious Metals with Purpose
Our commitment to ethical sourcing extends to the metal that cradles your diamond. Our recycled precious metals are responsibly sourced and conflict-free, adhering to standards set by the United Nations.
By choosing recycled or responsibly mined gold and platinum, we significantly reduce the environmental impact of our creations while upholding the durability and brilliance synonymous with Prins & Prins diamonds.
A Better Standard for the Jewellery Industry
As sustainability regulations tighten across the globe — with the USA’s FTC Green Guides and the EU’s forthcoming legislation cracking down on unverifiable claims — we welcome a more transparent era in jewellery marketing.
At Prins & Prins, we do not rely on vague terms like “eco-friendly engagement ring.” Instead, we communicate real, verifiable practices that reflect our legacy of honesty and excellence. We invite regulatory bodies and fellow jewellers in South Africa to adopt similar standards rooted in truth and sustainability.
